Timothy Spall to lead ITV’s new Hatton Garden drama

A new four-part drama about the 2015 Hatton Garden heist has been commissioned by ITV.

Hatton Garden will be written by Jeff Pope (Little Boy Blue) and Terry Winsor (Hot Money, Essex Boys).

Timothy Spall OBE (Pierrepoint, The Kings Speech, Cider with Rosie), Kenneth Cranham (Trauma, Hot Fuzz, Maleficent) and Brian F. O’Byrne (Flashforward, The Magicians, Mercy Street) will take the lead roles supported by David Hayman (Trial and Retribution) Nasser Memarzia (Kingdom of Heaven) and Alex Norton (Taggart).

Hatton Garden tells the inside story of how these elderly men completed a heist of previously unseen scale and ambition, it will show the planning, preparation and organisation they used to infiltrate the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit Company. It will detail the sometimes fractious relationships of the perpetrators and the complex police operation that eventually captured them.

Jeff Pope commented; “This is one of the most high profile crimes of the last decade and we wanted to understand what had happened – and why it had happened. The research threw up some fascinating detail and blew away many of the misconceptions about this story. It was not about a bunch of ‘loveable old blokes’, many box holders lost everything in the raid and we will reflect this. But the planning was clever and the characters involved unique.”

This drama will take on one of the largest robberies in British history and one committed by such an unlikely group with an all-star cast and an award winning writing team. Hatton Garden promises to be one of those shows that people talk about for a long time afterwards. Hopefully it lives up to it’s potential!

Filming will commence in June 2017.
