On the season premiere of Legion, we were introduced to David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled man who hears voices in his head. The episode began with a montage showing Haller’s life from birth to adulthood.

Haller was being held at a government facility and was interrogated about his condition. Behind closed doors they discussed that he might be the most powerful mutant they’ve ever come across but that Haller doesn’t understand what he’s capable of. They also pondered on if they should kill him while they have the chance.

Haller explained how he’d attempted suicide by hanging himself. He’d since been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and spent six years in Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital.

During his time there he met the girl of his dreams, Sydney “Syd” Barrett (Rachel Keller). She was a fellow patient who refused to be touched. Syd and Haller were drawn to each other and she agreed to be his girlfriend.

One day she was to be discharged from the hospital. Before leaving Haller kissed her goodbye and they switched bodies. While switched Haller was evacuated as Syd. Back inside, Syd had used his abilities to magically seal the patients in their rooms and Haller’s friend, Lenny “Cornflakes” Busker (Aubrey Plaza) was killed.

Back at the interrogation, Haller was told that Syd wasn’t real. Confused and upset he started to become aware of his powers and used telekinesis to fly a pen into the face of the man asking the questions. He then took out the entire room but was knocked out by gas.

While unconscious he found himself in a memory where he was being pursued by Ptonomy Wallace (Jeremie Harris) and Kerry Loudermilk (Amber Midthunder). Before they got to him he found Syd who explained she had been projected into the memory and gave him some advice on how to escape when he regained consciousness.

After being captured by the government he awoke sat in a chair in a swimming pool. It was explained to him that the water could be electrified at the touch of a button should he not comply.

At the end of the episode he followed Syd’s advice and slipped out of his chair below the water. As he did so the room above was engulfed in flames, killing everyone. When Haller emerged he was met by Syd, Ptonomy and Kerry.

They were part of an assault on the facility and were there to extract him. Once outside there was much gunfire as the security tried to prevent the escape. Other mutants were there to help and used their powers to fight. Once clear of the facility, Haller was introduced to Melanie Bird (Jean Smart).
