Carrie Underwood adds gospel twist to Church Bells for 2016 CMT Music Awards

Carrie Underwood was the big winner during last night’s 2016 CMT Music Awards and she proved just why everyone loves her with a stellar performance.

Taking to the stage to perform her latest hit Church Bells, taken from her recent album Storyteller, Underwood switched things up. The song opened with Underwood singing accompanied only by her banjo player before the full band joined in.

Towards the end of the song Underwood was joined onstage by a gospel choir adding plenty of goosebumps to every member of the audience and the viewers at home. The unexpected twist elevated the song and made Underwood’s performance one of the night’s best.

During the awards Underwood took home Female Video of the Year and CMT Performance of the Year. Her 4 year streak of winning Video of the Year was broken by Tim McGraw who collected the prize for his video Humble and Kind.
