Meet a slot car collector and celebrate collecting stuff

This post is sponsored by Safestore.

When I was younger I used to collect all kinds of things. Comics, sticker albums, coins, LEGO, Warhammer miniatures and my favourite thing of all to collect was anything Transformers related. 30-something years later and I still have many of the things I’ve collected.

These days the main things I collect are video games but like many forms of entertainment as things go digital it’s not quite as satisfying anymore. Having something tangible that you could hold, organise and display was the best thing about collecting and that’s sadly starting to disappear.

Something else I collected for a while when I was quite young was Scalextric. I had boxes of track and a handful of cars to race. My grandad built a custom pull down table in our spare room that had a track mounted on it. Changing the track and racing the cars was endless amounts of fun. I wonder if it’s all still packed up and hidden away in my parents loft?

Meet Colin Hughes, the owner of over 1,200 slot cars in Safestore’s video below:

Last month Safestore launched a #stuffisgreat campaign to celebrate the stuff people own and have collected over the years. The campaign wants to challenge what seems to be a growing minimalist trend encouraging people not to get attached to possessions and to constantly de-clutter.

Anyone who has collected anything at all will tell you of the joy it had brought them and they can look back fondly on how and when it came into their possession. Collections are full of memories and they are a part of who we are today. They can also be passed on and enjoyed by future generations.

As part of their campaign Safestore are taking a look at several people who are passionate about their collections. First up is Colin Hughes, a 43 year old IT worker with a passion for collecting slot cars. Meet Colin and check out his collection in the video above.

Colin initially started off racing slot cars for 6 months before he started collecting them. His collection started in 2008 and has since grown to over 1,200 slot cars.

Collections can easily be worth a lot of money, especially if you keep the items in perfect condition. Colin realised his cars were getting damaged through racing so he started buying one to race and another to keep.

Do you have a collection but are running out of space to store it all? Safestore have 105 secure storage facilities nationwide where you can rent a space big enough for your stuff.

Check out the Safestore website for more information. To find out more about Colin and other collectors visit their #stuffisgreat webpage.
