The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Blu-ray review

11 years ago SpongeBob SquarePants embarked on his first big screen adventure and it was a resounding success at the box office. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie grossed over $140 million at the box office and further cemented the loveable spongeā€™s position as one of the best loved animated characters of our times. Rumours of a second film began circulating shortly after that movieā€™s release and now finally a second movie is hitting cinemas in the shape of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water 3D. Can lightening strike twice for SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and co?

The early signs were good considering the film had taken over $200 million at the box office beforeĀ even opening in the UK yet. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water 3D sees Bikini Bottom thrown into chaos when the secret recipe for Krabby Patties is stolen in the midst of Plankton attempting to get his hands on it by using rather extreme measures. As the people of Bikini Bottom turn into violent hooligans, SpongeBob enlists the help of his friends Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke), Squidward (Rodger Bumpass), Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence), Mr Krabs (Clancy Brown) and Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) to track the formula down and restore the town to its previous peaceful ways.

The movie wastes no time getting into the storyline with pirate Burger-Beard (Antonio Banderas) appearing before any of the characters you know and love. Credit to Banderas that he makes a very clichĆ©d role into something pretty entertaining and brings entertainment value in buckets. As always with SpongeBob the humour operates on two levels providing plenty of laughs for adults as well as the kids itā€™s primarily aimed at. Thereā€™s the usual mix of sight gags, physical comedy and crazy humour, and our sides were a little bit sore by the end of the movie from laughing so much.

One of the highlights of the movie is when SpongeBob and Plankton build a time machine to return to the moment that the Krabby Patty formula was stolen. Along the way they take some bizarre turns with one including a dolphin by the name of Bubbles (Matt Berry). To say any more would ruin it but itā€™s one of the most hilarious moments in the movie without a doubt.

The only real disappointment of the movie is that the much publicised ā€˜out of waterā€™ part of the title doesnā€™t last all that long. Out of the filmā€™s 92 minute running time, only around 25 minutes actually take place above the surface. When SpongeBob and co do emerge out of the water it adds a fresh take and it is quite a novel thing to see the characters rendered in beautiful 3D. The animation is absolutely stunning but sadly it just doesnā€™t last long enough.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water 3D is a real family film and itā€™s definitely going to be delighting audiences all summer long. The appeal of SpongeBob knows no bounds and this new adventure is almost as strong as his first. Packed with off-the-wall humour, some real WTF moments and plenty of laughs, itā€™s proof that thereā€™s plenty of life left in the character yet and we hope itā€™s not another 11 years until the next big screen outing.
