Dallas: 10 reasons why it shouldn’t have been cancelled

We list the reasons we think that show shouldn’t have been cancelled.

Dallas season 3

Dallas may have ended its three season run in the US ages ago but the series finale only arrived in the UK in the early hours of this morning.

If you haven’t seen season 3 of Dallas and don’t want any spoilers then we suggest you stop reading now. If you have seen it and want to hear why we think the show should have been renewed then keep reading.

Talk about leaving fans hanging. The season 3, and series, finale of Dallas left fans gasping when Christopher Ewing (Jesse Metcalfe) was killed in a car explosion and John Ross (Josh Henderson) discovered he had a secret sister. Elena (Jordana Brewster) witnessed Christopher’s demise moments after finding out she was pregnant.

Elsewhere Nicolas (Juan Pablo Di Pace) fled after Elena almost killed him when she discovered he killed her brother, John Ross teamed up with Judith (Judith Light) to get his Arctic Leases deal back on track after she was appointed the new Texas Railroad Commissioner, and the cartel were murdered in prison.

With so many questions left for fans, we’ve listed out 10 reasons why we think the show should have got a fourth season.

1. Who killed Christopher? Well we’ll never know now will we. We’re pretty sure it must have been something to do with Nicolas but we’ll just have to keep speculating. His death was a big shock and we didn’t see it coming at all. Technically we didn’t see him die on screen so he could have survived the explosion.

2. Who is Elena’s baby daddy? We were looking forward to this storyline. As Elena slept with both Nicolas and John Ross, either could be the baby daddy. On the one hand it would be a cruel twist to make it Nicolas’ but as he’s still alive it would keep him in the series. On the other hand having it be John Ross’ would be an interesting twist and final slap in the face for poor Pamela (Julie Gonzalo).

3. We’ll never meet John Ross’ secret sister. In the season three finale he was heading off to find her with the help of Bum (Kevin Page). If she is anything like John Ross she would have brought another shape-shifting dynamic to the show. Oh what could have been!

4. Pamela’s revenge. C’mon, if you were Pamela wouldn’t you be pretty pissed off. Her husband cheated on her, she lost her babies in season 1, her father was wrongly imprisoned (although that wasn’t a bad thing), she nearly died from an accidental overdose, and she lost her shares in Ewing Global. To say life handed her a crappy deal would be an understatement. We wanted to see Pamela rise from the ashes and come back fighting.

5. The downfall of Nicolas. Despite being shot twice by Elena, Nicolas seemed fine when he boarded that plane didn’t he? We wanted to see Elena work with the Ewings to bring Nicolas to justice and get revenge.

6. The impact of Christopher’s murder. Even though there was a planned time jump for season 4, we still wanted to see how the Ewings coped in the aftermath of losing one of the family. It could have brought great dramatic tension and changed the dynamic of the show.

7. Judith Brown Ryland. Hands up who thought she stole the majority of season 2? Judith would have been certain to be upgraded to a main character in season 4 and her unholy alliance with John Ross would have brought plenty of drama. We loved her and we’re sad we won’t see her again.

8. Emma’s (Emma Bell) redemption. The wily minx caused a hell of a lot of problems in season 3 and season 4 could have been an opportunity for her to redeem herself. She finally realised she had no future with John Ross and she seemed genuinely regretful of the (many) things she’d done. Would Emma finally go on the straight and narrow and build a proper relationship with Ann (Brenda Strong)?

9. A huge, messy love triangle. The foundations were set for Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Ann to be caught in a messy love triangle with Tracey (Melinda Clarke) and Harris (Mitch Pileggi). Ann was already getting jealous of Tracey and she’d also shared a kiss with Harris. Oh what a wonderful soapy mess this storyline could have been.

10. The theme tune. Who else loves the iconic theme tune? It never fails to make us smile and not hearing it on a weekly basis quite frankly sucks. At least we can get the DVDs.

Dallas seasons 1 and 2 are available on DVD in the UK.
