Loveable rogues of gaming

We pick out some of our favourites.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue comes to Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 14th. This got us thinking about loveable rogues in gaming so we’ve picked out some of our favourites.

Shay Patrick Cormac – Assassin’s Creed Rogue

For the first time ever players will get to experience the Assassin’s Creed universe from the perspective of a Templar. Shay is a 21-year-old recruit to the Brotherhood of Assassin’s. He becomes disillusioned with their methods and cause. After an assignment ends in disaster he finds himself betrayed and abandoned. This turns him to the Templar Order where he offers his services as an Assassin Hunter.

Wario – Super Mario Land 2

Mario’s garlic-loving evil cousin made his debut in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. Obsessed by treasure and fuelled by greed and personal gain he eventually went on to get his own games. Despite starting out as a villain he’s become very popular with Nintendo fans.

Doctor Ivo Robotnik – Sonic the Hedgehog

Also known as Eggman, Doctor Robotnik is the main antagonist of Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog series. He’s overweight, maniacal and has a crazy dress-sense but he’s most famous for his genius intelligence. He has a fondness for machines and plans to take over the world but has a hatred towards Sonic who always thwarts his plans.

Wheatley – Portal 2

Brilliantly voiced by Stephen Merchant, Wheatley became the star of Portal 2. A wonderful Artificial Intelligence that isn’t all that intelligent. He starts the game as your guide and helper before turning into the villain as he become mad with power.

Vaas Montenegro – Far Cry 3

Unpredictable and borderline insane, Vaas was the standout character in Far Cry 3. Leader of a group of mercenaries who lured people to an island only to kidnap and ransom them. Most famous for his definition of insanity speech.

Giovanni – Pokémon Red & Blue

Giovanni is the boss of criminal outfit Team Rocket in Pokémon Red & Blue. You get to face off against him and his polite manners several times during the games. He’s happy to settle things with a simple Pokémon battle which is very reasonable for a dangerous crime lord.

Kane – Command & Conquer

The evil mastermind of the Brotherhood of Nod in the Command & Conquer games. Kane’s reputation is legendary and he’s treated like a messiah by his followers. A bit crazy and full of charisma he makes life incredibly difficult for you but you can’t but like the guy.

The Joker – Batman

Batman’s nemesis, the Joker is a criminal mastermind and an entertaining one at that. Famously voiced by Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, Star Wars) he’s one of those characters you just love to hate. He’s always there to make Batman’s life difficult but it’s always great fun to go up against him.

Sephiroth – Final Fantasy VII

The main antagonist of Final Fantasty VII he won over as many fans as protagonist Cloud Strife. The result of genetic experiment by Shinra who spliced him with alien DNA. Instantly recognisable by his long platinum hair, black coat and huge masamune sword.

Bowser – Mario

No matter what Mario is doing Bowser is always there trying to ruin his day. From kidnapping his friends or Princess Peach to spoiling his fun on the kart track, tennis court or golf course. He’s so evil you can’t help but smile at him. Our particular favourite moment is when he turns up to ruin the fun during a game of Mario Party.
