I’m a Porn Star DVD review

Ever wondered what itā€™s like to live the life of a porn star? Well wonder no more thanks to new documentary Iā€™m a Porn Star which is directed by actor Charlie David, best-known for his role in cult gay series Danteā€™s Cove. Aiming to dispel some of the myths about the gay porn industry and give you a unique look into the lives of four of its most popular stars, Iā€™m a Porn Star features candid interviews and lots of carefully edited footage from the films the stars have made.

Anyone hoping to get titillation from Iā€™m a Porn Star should probably look elsewhere because whilst the documentary is about gay porn itā€™s in no way pornographic. Starting off with a brief history of the gay porn industry, Iā€™m a Porn Star soon turns into a reality show style documentary focusing on the contributions of porn stars Colby Jansen, Johnny Rapid, Brent Everett and Rocco Reed.

Iā€™m a Porn Star gets surprisingly candid with the four main contributors. As well as talking about how they got into porn and giving insight into what itā€™s like to have to perform on demand, each of the four men has their own personal story to share. One of the most interesting is Colby Jansen who had always identified as straight even though he was working in the gay porn industry. He talks about falling for his wife who is transgender and openly discusses the confusion it caused him for his own sexuality and the reaction his family had when he told them.

Another surprisingly candid moment comes courtesy of Johnny Rapid who is straight and has two children with his girlfriend. We follow him to a shoot for popular US underwear range Andrew Christian and he struggles to get aroused which causes him embarrassment. Weā€™re surprised he let the cameras capture that moment but it brings a more human side to a performer is usually seen in the throes of sex in a variety of positions with seemingly no trouble at all.

Brent Everett talks openly about the relationship he has with his parents and how supportive theyā€™ve been since he told them what he did for a living. They even attended a gay porn awards with him which is apparently the first time thatā€™s every happened. Weā€™re not sure our parents would be quite so understanding about it but itā€™s reassuring to hear that there are some people out there who can see past the surface of what the job entails.

One of the main talking points of the documentary is the perception that men who perform in gay porn must be gay. The four stars participating in Iā€™m a Porn Star address that and for all of them, regardless of their sexuality, they see it as a job. The point is made that gay porn pays much better than straight porn so itā€™s a much more lucrative industry if you want to go into porn.

Iā€™m a Porn Star wasnā€™t quite what we expected and actually it does bring a more human side to the performers that are involved in the gay porn industry. Weā€™re sure a lot of people will get this thinking itā€™s going to show plenty of flesh but if thatā€™s the only reason you get it youā€™ll be very disappointed. If itā€™s a real look into the industry youā€™re after then youā€™ll find this a satisfying release.
