ITV has announced the casting for new four-part drama The Great Fire.

Andrew Buchan, Rose Leslie, Charles Dance, Jack Huston and Daniel Mays will star in the drama which is written by Tom Bradby. The Great Fire tells the story of baker Thomas Farriner and his involvement in The Great Fire of London.

Inspired by the events of 1666 with the backdrop of King Charles II’s court, The Great Fire looks at the circumstances that led to the infamous fire. Thomas Farriner is played by Andrew Buchan with Rose Leslie playing his sister-in-law Sarah.

Daniel Mays will play diarist Samuel Pepys with Perdita Weeks as his wife Elizabeth. Jack Huston will appear as King Charles II, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as James Duke of York, Andrew Tiernan as prisoner Vincent and Antonia Clarke as Frances Stewart.

Rounding out the cast is Charles Dance as Lord Denton, David Schofield as the Duke of Hanford and Sonya Cassidy as The Queen.

Douglas Rae, who will executive produce the drama, said, “In 1666 London was the greatest city in the world with a population of 300,000. In just four days The Great Fire destroyed nearly half the city and threatened the monarchy. It’s a fascinating premise for a drama and creates the perfect backdrop for Tom Bradby to be at his most creative. We have assembled an amazing cast and production team and we’re looking forward to filming Tom’s fantastic scripts,”

The Great Fire will unfold over four consecutive days with each episode running for 60 minutes. Filming begins this month for nine weeks.
