Bo Bruce – Before I Sleep album review

Interesting debut from The Voice contestant.

Bo Bruce

Bo Bruce first came to the nation’s attention whilst auditioning for The Voice UK last year but now the young artist is set to release her debut album, Before I Sleep. Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid and Henry Binns of Zero 7 are only a couple of the producers involved in this album. We had a listen and here are our thoughts.

The album kicks off with a strong pop song, Landslide. The track is quite generic and sounds quite similar to what’s on the market at the moment. Bo Bruce’s voice though stands out and its fragility is quite infectious. Both Save Me and Alive kick off slowly and break out during their choruses. The tracks are both pleasant but are missing something special.

Something special on the album is Speed The Fire, this mesmerizing track kicks off with just a guitar and vocals and is hypnotic from the get go. With its haunting vocals and dramatic drums the track really is a beautiful pop song. Equally as intriguing is Telescope with its big anthem-like chorus that explodes in your ears with might.

Slowing things down and adding a bit of fragility to the album is Ghost Town. Bo Bruce sings her heart out again and her haunting voice resonates throughout this slow burner. Another touching ballad on the album is Holding The Light with Bo Bruce’s stunning voice, which serenades you.

The album is filled with plenty of ballads that will touch you in a way or another, Light Keeper is light whilst The Fall is heartbreaking.

Giving the album a good lift is another vibrant pop song, The Hands I Hold. This great track sounds perfect as a single release with its big chorus. Golden is also quite infectious with its dramatic chorus and edgy beat.

The album ends with the sensual How We’re Made.

Before I Sleep is Bo Bruce’s debut and as such it is quite varied. For us some parts of the album work and we enjoy whilst other parts we would have rather not had on the album. Bo Bruce has an amazing voice and it does make all the difference. We are quite intrigued to see what she’ll come up with next.
