The CMA celebrates the 7 songwriters with 3 number ones in a year

The 2024 CMA Triple Play Awards ceremony held this week at the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum in Nashville was a celebration of exceptional songwriting talent in the country music industry. Hosted by composer and CMA Board member, Jim Beavers, the event honoured seven CMA Triple Play Award recipients, as well as Troy Tomlinson, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group Nashville and CMA Board member, who received the prestigious CMA Songwriter Advocate Award.

The CMA Triple Play Award is presented to songwriters who pen three No. 1 songs within a 12-month period according to the Country Aircheck, Billboard Country Airplay, and Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. This year, seven songwriters were recognized, including Ashley Gorley, who received the award four times. Other recipients included Charlie Handsome, Jelly Roll, Chase McGill, Hunter Phelps, Jordan Schmidt, and Thomas Rhett.

Each recipient was pleasantly surprised with a special guest presenter who played a significant role in their career. These presenters shared heartfelt words of congratulations before inviting the honorees to the stage. Notable presenters included Jesse Frasure, Mitchell Tenpenny, HARDY, Jordan Davis, and Chris DuBois.

Troy Tomlinson, the recipient of the CMA Songwriter Advocate Award, was honored for his dedication to supporting and advancing the art of songwriting. The ceremony included surprise performances by Kenny Chesney and a writer’s round featuring songs that Tomlinson helped pioneer, performed by McGill, Beavers, and Tom Douglas.

Prior to receiving his award, Tomlinson was celebrated through a video montage featuring interviews and messages from artists, songwriters, and industry executives whose careers have been touched by his work. Among those who paid tribute to Tomlinson’s legacy were Kelsea Ballerini, Dean Dillon, Miranda Lambert, and Lainey Wilson.

Overall, the 2024 CMA Triple Play Awards ceremony was a testament to the remarkable talent and dedication of songwriters in the country music industry, highlighting their invaluable contributions to the genre’s rich tapestry of storytelling and emotion.
